Bálint Szele: Beliefs and Perceptions of Students of English about Language and Culture

Article

The article summarises the beliefs and perceptions of students of English from several levels (including A1 to C1) based on their responses to a questionnaire, which asked them about how they perceived the relationship between language skills and cultural awareness in the case of English-speaking countries. There were two additional questions in the questionnaire requiring textual responses, namely What is your reason for learning English? Why are you studying it? and Why do you / don't you want to achieve native-like competence? These two questions were designed to get a deeper insight into students' ideas about the importance of culture in international communication. First, a summary of the results is presented, followed by a more detailed presentation of textual responses.
